Tambon or subdistrict is the third level administrative division in Thailand under the province (changwat) and district (amphoe). There are over 7,000 tambons in Thailand. Each tambon is divided into villages (muban) and carries out local administrative duties such as issuing marriage certificates, land registration, and collecting taxes. Tambons are led by a Tambon Administrative Organization (TAO) or a subdistrict municipality, which is responsible for managing the local infrastructure, social welfare, and public services. The size and population of a tambon vary greatly, with some having only a few hundred residents while others have tens of thousands. The term "tambon" originates from Sanskrit and means "village or settlement".
